A pioneer in celioscopic surgery
About
Dr. Philippe Mouret started his medical career in 1955, and began experimenting with celioscopic exploration in 1968. He would spend decades improving his technique and become the first surgeon in the world to perform a celioscopic cholecystectomy.
Today, he is recognized as the pioneer of the modern celioscopic surgery technique, using two separate converging incisions in the abdomen, when other surgeons such as Palmer and Muhe would only use one incision. This small but important innovation would completely transform modern surgery, and would be considered in the field as the “Second French Revolution.”

“I will leave you with a comparison between mountaineering and surgery, which to me present obvious similarities: we say of these climbers hiking vertical slopes with just their bare hands, that they take crazy risks. They do so only because they are confident, and they never fall. But know that before showcasing their skills in front of the cameras, they chose their wall, repeated their moves countless times, and first trained with ropes and pitons.”

The Mouret Instruments
When he performed the first ever celioscopic cholecystectomy in 1987, Dr. Mouret had to use traditional tools which were not adapted to his innovative technique. So Dr. Mouret partnered with device manufacturing company Karl Storz and created the first set of instruments specifically made for celioscopic surgery.
